NYE Family Fun Ideas!

Staying in:

Go to your local Redbox location and rent a movie or two for just a buck. Go get some jiffy pop from the grocery store and pop that and enjoy it with homemade hot cocoa!  (add a shot of peppermint schnapps for the adults!)

Hot Cocoa:  in a small pot, heat 1/4 cup water with 3 tbls cocoa and 3 tbls sugar. Stir until it is all dissolved and boiling slowly. Slowly pour in and stir 3 cups of milk and heat through. Makes 3 servings! Use whole milk if you want it nice and rich. Add a little extra cocoa if you prefer things more chocolaty.....I always do!

Let the kids eat pizza on fancy dinner plates and drink ginger ale out of wine/champagne glasses! Go out and get plain party hats and let them bedazzle them with beads and glitter.

Make edible party hats! Get waffle ice cream cones and brush them with melted chocolate and use icing to adhere candies or decorate them!!!

 Going out:
There is an interesting family event at the Bernheim  The event has a "moon" theme!

Cook with your kids this week!

Make something special! Whoopie Pies!

For the pies
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
4 oz. (1/2 cup) butter
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
For the vanilla fluff filling
1 3/4 cup. plus 2 T. sugar
10 T. water
1 envelope gelatin powder (1/4 oz.)
3/4 cup egg whites
1 1/2 pounds butter, room temperature (substitute 1/2 pound of peanut butter for butter and omit vanilla for a peanut butter filling)
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
For the pies:
In a bowl, stir together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, soda and salt together. In a mixer, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Slowly add the egg and vanilla extract. Scrape the bowl thoroughly and add little bit of the dry ingredients. Mix and then add a little bit of the buttermilk. Alternate this process until all the drys and buttermilk are used.
Scoop 1/4 cup of batter on to a parchment-lined sheet tray and bake at 375 degrees F for 15-18 mins., rotating once.
Remove from ovens and let cool on trays.
For the vanilla fluff filling:
Soak gelatin in 2 tbls. of water. In a heavy-duty pot, stir together sugar and water until dissolved. Cook at a high heat until 266 degrees F.
Meanwhile, in a mixer, whisk whites until light and foamy and carefully slowly pour hot syrup into the whipping whites. While still hot and whisking, add bloomed gelatin and continue whisking until cool.

On the machine still, slowly add butter, a tablespoon at a time, until the butter is fully incorporated. Add salt and vanilla extract and mix.
Ready to use immediately.

Jump over the hump

In the spirit of getting over the Wednesday "hump", take your kids to jump over the hump.  On Wednesdays, Pump It Up! has open play for kids ages 2-5 from 10am to 11:30am. It is $5 for kids over the age of 2.  Often, they have coupons on the back of Kroger receipts, check and see if you have one!  This place has several large inflatables and the kids will have a great time jumping for an hour or so. It is not that big, which I think is a bonus because you are not constantly trying to track them down!

Why not schedule Santa to call your little one and check up on them tonight?! It's free!

Weekend Holiday Fun

The Bass Pro Shops in Clarksville, IN is a wonderful place to enjoy a few hours with the family all year round. However, during the holiday season, the place is transformed into a winter wonderland. Santa is there at 10am to sit for free picutres, kids can write letters to Santa or color, they can play with remote control cars and other toys.  Then, there is always the entire store to explore full of animals to look at and a huge fish tank. Parents can enjoy a Starbuck's coffee as well!
