Sea Lion Sneak Peek

My friend, Cyndi, and her son joined us at the zoo today to get a sneak peak at the sea lion and seal exhibit. We just saw the sea lion show since it was so crowded and a bit warm for our kids. Since it is a new exhibit they are still working out the kinks as they started 10 minutes late. The show was probably about 10-15 minutes, but it was very cute, entertaining, and informative. The seated area unfortunately had very little shade so I’d get there a little early to pick out a shady spot on sunny days. I look forward to seeing this again in a few months. They are also keeping a blog about the Glacier Run area if you are interested

Activities at Bass Pro Shops

Through July 11th, Bass Pro Shops is hosting various days of activities, crafts and free family fun.  You can pretend to cast a line to catch a fish, make smores and more.  The store in IN is just interesting to visit on its own, but having some free activities makes it even more worth the trip!

Old Louisville

During the summer months, there is a Shakespeare festival that takes place in Old Louisville in Central Park.  It is just across the street from St. James Ct.  On the weekends, the play is 45 minutes long and geared toward the family/younger crowd.

We parked in St. James Ct. and took a nice stroll on the shaded sidewalk. It was a lovely morning even though it was hot as we took in the sites of the historic homes and beautiful architecture.  The kids loved going for a walk around the court and seeing the beautiful fountain.

At around 9:45, we headed to the ampitheater in Central Park to arrive for the show at 10am.  We roamed around at first and enjoyed the park before taking our seats.  It was a 2 person show of Twelfth Night and there were many chuckles from the crowd!  It was not hot at all since the ampitheater is nicely positioned in the shade.  After, we went over the the playground for some romping around and cooled off in the fantastic water spray and sat for a small snack under a huge old tree.  It was a fabulous way to spend the morning!

There are a lot of fun things to do in Louisville, but let’s not forget about the fun stuff on the OTHER side of the river! Here are a few places to go check out. I have yet to check most of these places out, but look forward to in the near future! What places have you been to that you can tell us about on our facebook page?

They have a interpretive center (for a small fee), a few trails, and George Rogers Clark homesite. The park’s website has some activities for kids to learn about more about the earth’s history.

Huber’s Farm
Just thought I’d mentioned it once more since it is one the OTHER side of the river….

Derby Dinner Theater
Claim to fame: Derby Dinner Playhouse is proud to be one of the oldest and largest continually operating professional dinner theatres in the country. They have shows posted through Oct. 2011. They also have children’s shows for breakfast and lunch.

Spend a morning, an afternoon, or evening here picking fruit or just enjoying the outdoors. They have activities for kids and great restaurants.

AMF Rose Bowl Lanes

Today I went with a friend and her kids to Rose Bowl Lanes to use my kids bowl free coupons. It was so much fun! The place was very clean and the staff was extremely friendly.  They set up the bumpers and gave us a little ramp for the kids to use to bowl, since they are so young.  We used the smallest balls which were about 5 lbs and the kids didn't have a problem handling them, even my 18 month old!  We had to pay to rent shoes, $4 a pair.  It was worth a try and we will do it again on the next grossly humid day!

Also, I noticed there is a great weekend special.  On Saturdays, you can get 2 hrs of bowling, unlimited pizza by the slice and shoe rentals for $14.99. Now, I suggest you call about this because I only saw the sign briefly and didn't read the fine details. I suspect there is a limit on the number of people, like that package is for 4 people or something.  And, I don't remember seeing if that includes drinks.

Speed Museum Review: By Jeanette

Inside the Speed Art Museum, is a little place called Art Sparks that is geared towards kids. We had a chance to visit it for the first time over Memorial Weekend. We spent about 90 minutes there, but my son probably could have stayed another hour – especially since it was not too crowded. The museum is free, but Art Sparks is $5/person with 2 and under free. (Note: If you participate in the Library Summer Reading program you’ll get one family pass (up to four people) in for free.) It reminded me of history museum too with a tepee and an old time kitchen. They also have a room designed for the inner artist to paint and draw. There was a special room for preschoolers. There several different types of toys to build: plastics, magnets, and wood material. The website does a good job in describing all the activities there. I would go back again when I need to escape extreme weather. On a side note, parking was in a pay garage. There may have been other parking available, but we just parked in the garage.

Review of Cherokee Park: By Jeanette

Cherokee is another great park in Louisville for a picnic, to exercise, or just to be outside to enjoy nature. There are several amenities there from dog runs, archery range, multiple playgrounds with bathroom facilities nearby, and mountain bike trails to name a few. The playground we like to frequent has both baby swings and regular along with smaller play area and a splash area. The splash area is concrete though. There are also plenty of picnic tables and a covered area there with shade trees. We park in the parking lot and I’ll take the boys for a walk/jog around the 2.4mile one way Scenic Loop (which is another reason I really like the park) and then end up at the playground.

Huber's Strawberry Picking: By Jeanette

Looking for a place to pick strawberries before they go out of season? Check out Joe Hubers Family Farm. It is in Starlight, IN – just under an hour drive from Louisville. We went last year for the first time and returned again over Memorial weekend. They have strawberries patches galore! You ride in a wagon being pulled by a tractor out to the patches. Pick what you want and of course eat lots. They do have a kid play area that is $4/kid that includes a playground, barn with animals, and some other things for kids to do. There is also a family restaurant on the grounds that is tasty with prices from $7-16. The farm has a variety of u-pick produce throughout the growing season including raspberries, apples, peaches, pumpkins. There is also a winery for the adults too!

National Doughnut Day! FREE DOUGHNUTS!

Friday June 4 is National Doughnut Day and participating Krispy Kreme stores are giving away a free glazed doughnut

Louisville Free Library Summer Reading : By Jeanette

June 1 starts the library’s summer reading program for kids from birth to 5th grade. That’s right my newborn and yours can participate! It’s never too early to read to a child. We had a lot of fun with this last year with my son who was just over a year old then. After your child has read 10 books and returned the reading folder he/she picked up earlier she gets some cool stuff! See a Bats game, explore a cavern, and enjoy a Frosty to name a few of the goodies. Check out the website for more info!
