Please check with these locations first if you have any questions, especially on holidays.  Also we are not informed if events get canceled so again check the website of the event before going if possible or if you hear of a cancelation or change let us know to update our calendar! Thanks for your help and cooperation!

Also, we referenced being able to give away Yo Gabba Gabba tickets.  We are still looking into this.  We were promised 2 tickets but we have not gotten them in the mail and we will let you know what we know when we know it!

Review of Louisville's Baby Loves Disco By: Stephanie

Baby Loves Disco was the most fun my kids had in a long time, and we know how to have some fun!  My son was so sweaty (in a good way) and my daughter probably had sore cheeks from smiling and lauging.  When we got there, they just ran into the big room and headed for the inflatables.  My son jumped for a long time but my daughter stopped for a moment and thought, huh, what's that I hear?  MUSIC! She proceeded to run circles around the dance floor countless times.  The DJs were dressed in their cool disco attire and had games like hula hoop contests, freeze dance and the limbo!

We took breaks from bouncing and dancing to play in the baby area, make sock puppets, get some tattoos and have a snack break.  Oh, and let's not forget....we popped a ton of bubbles.  The highlight of the evening was the face painting. My son was transformed into a roaring tiger and my daughter was made into a cute little kitty.

KaZoing did a wonderful thing in hosting this event since it was a fundraiser! We had such a wonderful time and can't wait to go back for a similar event or just an open play sometime soon.

Blackacre Conservancy Preserve in Louisville By: Jeanette

The kids and I ventured over to Blackacre Conservancy this past weekend. Fortunately it was free. I think I had my expectations too high. It took me longer to find it because I was expecting an easier to spot sign off of Tucker Station road. However we did find it and drove back on the gravel driveway. I had a hard time trying to follow the signs on where to park. I ended up parking next to the few others cars there in a pasture. We missed the animal feedings this morning, but we still saw 2 goats and 2 horses in the pasture. We checked out the old barn and the smokehouse. Several of the buildings were marked private. We walked over to the nature center only to find it locked up as well. I was hoping to run into someone or find trail descriptions about whether a jogging stroller would be able to go on any of the trails. Unfortunately I did not see anyone around to get help and the informational kiosks did not help me out either.

On a nice note, there were chairs and tents set up for a wedding later in the afternoon. The preserve looks like it would be a great outdoor setting for a wedding.

I think I might return again when I can have another adult with me with the kids to check out the trails and hopefully the nature center would be open. I like the location of it being so close (a short drive down Taylorsville Road from Veteran’s Park). It might also be fun to come when they have re-enactors there (Sundays 1-5), but am not for sure about paying for it though.

Jeffersontown Gaslight Festival 2010

Although there have been Gaslight Festival events going on for a few days, the three day fun-filled weekend starts tonight at 7pm.  There will be arts and crafts booths on Waterson Trail near Taylorsville Rd.  There will also be live music throughout the weekend.  The children's are will be open on Saturday and Sunday.  Check the website for times and locations!

The Gaslight Festival has had activities going on all week. What started as a small street fair has blossomed into 200,000 visitor/year festival. They have something for everyone. We were able to check it out for a little bit last year and walked around all the arts, crafts, and commercial booths and even saw ‘Elvis’ drive in for a concert. If you are not big on crowds earlier in the day is better. As evening approached  last year, more people came out. Parking is available in surrounding neighborhoods and some families opened up their yards for pay parking. Some of the highlights this year: Thursday - parade, Friday - balloon glow, Saturday – Karaoke finals, and on Sat-Sun there’s the arts and crafts booths, live entertainment and a children’s playground. Check out the website for additional information.

Fun Family Activities to do this Fall in Louisville By: Jeanette

Looking for some fun ways to spend outdoors with the family? Try some of these out:

Picnicking: Pack your lunch and enjoy the fall colors at places such as Bernheim Forest , Cherokee Park , Iroquois Park or Joe Creason Park  that have scenic views.

Geocaching: Go on a treasure hunt by picking out some coordinates at a local park and plug them into your GPS.

Letterboxing: Try this other type of treasure hunting while enjoying and hiking in the outdoors.

Biking:  There are maps for Riverwalk Trails and Levee Trails online as well as map your own trail at this link. No bike? Rent one at Wheel Fun Rentals

Arts and Crafts: Disney’s Family Fun magazine is one of my favorites and also is a great website for ideas especially for outdoor fun in the fall: from sun catchers to autumn placemats to leafy labyrinth

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest By: Jeanette

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a great place that connects people of all ages with nature. We spent a day there this past weekend to check it out and still did not get everything explored. It costs only $5/carload on weekends and holidays or otherwise is free. We started at the Visitor Center - a site to see in itself having been built from recycled wood and has a living, green roof. The staff there was super friendly in providing a trail map and giving suggestions for what to see and do with two little ones in tow.
We headed off to the Tree Canopy. This is a very short hike (stroller friendly) that goes out 75ft above the forest floor. It was great view and I imagine even better once the leaves start changing. We also checked out the children’s play garden. It was an ‘old school’ playground made from wood with some slides, monkey bars, and swings. It also had a few unique features such as a rock garden, xylophone, and smell maze. Outhouses, picnic tables were around this area too. We then head to Lake Nevin as suggested by the staff because they were getting ready for a Connect event. We hiked the gravel trail around the lake. They had birdhouses of all styles up for the event. It was fun having our oldest son spot them out along the trail. We did a few more hikes in the area and tried our hand at Letterboxing but were unsuccessful at our first attempt, but fun nonetheless.

We had a great time and look forward to going back and exploring some more, but recommend taking a first aid kit with bee sting care in it. There were numerous bees and both my husband and I got stung. Fortunately the kids were safe.

Bernheim has a variety of events for all ages. Check out its program and events tab on its website for additional details. Next time we hope to check out the Education Center and maybe attend Polywog Play Party or the Scarecrow Jubilee.

Middletown Family Fun Festival By: Stephanie

Tonight my husband and I headed to the Middletown Family Fun Festival in the heart of Middletown after dinner. It was a really fun evening!  The weather was nice even though it was cloudy but there was still plently of families out and about at the festival.  We parked at a nearby church and it was only a short walk to the park area.  In the park they have many vendors who are basically advertising their services but they are giving out little trinkets to the kids or they have games for them to play.  My kids got some yummy free popcorn and some balloons, so my little ones were thrilled.  They have 4 inflatables. One is geared toward preschool age, the other elementary. Then, there is a slide and a bouncy basketball game. They had staff monitoring all of the kids and keeping the numbers low on how many were in there.   All of the kids enjoyed the bouncing around!  As you go west a bit down the road, they have some food vendors serving your standard festival fare and in a large parking lot, they have a stage set up for live music. I wish I would have realized that earlier in the evening because my kids really enjoyed dancing to the music and we did that too late!

If you are looking for something to do tomorrow, head on over. It is very casual so you can go for as little as half an hour or you can spend 2 hours there.  And, since it's free.....what have you got to lose?

ReBump Maternity Resale in Louisville

A local mother, Jenny Hunter,  is trying to save some pregnant mommies-to-be some cash (so they can save it for diapers!) It's always fun to save money so you can budget for all of the fun events that we tell you about!  You can check out her site by clicking here

Here is what she has to say:

Hi! I am a SAHM of 3 active boys ages 5, 3, and 1. I attended high school at Eastern High School and went to college at Purdue in Indiana where I met my husband. After graduating college my husband and I moved around to Texas, Oklahoma, back to Texas and then decided to come back home to be closer to family (and babysitting!).

The main reason I have started my business is because I always got frustrated when pregnant and trying to buy clothing. I hated having to spend lots of money on clothes that I was only going to wear a few months, at the most. At that time I wished there was a place that only sold gently used maternity wear. That is when I had the idea to try it myself.
The past few weeks I have been purchasing inventory, tagging the items, building clothing racks, and getting everything organized. I am trying to get everything sorted so it will be easy to browse. All the clothing is sorted by size and type of clothing. It is in the detached garage at my house so weather is not an issue.

Our Grand Opening is this Saturday, September 11th, from 8-10:30am. Or if you would rather come at a different time, contact me and we can find a time that works better.

Labor Day Weekend WorldFest in Louisville By: Jeanette

If you are sticking around the Louisville area this holiday weekend, I recommend checking out the free event, WorldFest. We attended last year and had a great time! The highlight for us was trying out a huge variety of food while listening to music. It is hosted at the Belvedere. The Worldfest is a chance to celebrate the different cultures in Louisville. There is a parade of cultures that will be held on Saturday at noon. Other activities include 4 stages with music and dancing, and opportunities to purchase some crafts and cuisines of the various cultures. The festival will have some children’s events such as storytimes, face painting, and LMPD display. Checkout the website for times for children’s events and what will be on the 4 stages while you are there.

Touch a Truck in Clarksville By: Jeanette

We took a short drive north from Louisville this weekend to Touch-A-Truck in Clarksville, IN. The Clarksville Parks and Rec hosted this free event. It was a great experience for our family.

We arrived shortly after it started at 10am. We had a few waits in line to sit in a truck, but no more than 2 were ever in front of us. There was a huge variety of cars and trucks: UPS semi-truck, school bus, fire trucks, dump trucks, tow truck, power parachute, tour bus, police car, golf cart, and armored personnel carrier to name a few. The vehicles were open so children could get up in them, explore, and of course, honk the horn. Many of the operators of the vehicles were nearby and kid friendly. A pancake breakfast and a yard sale were going on simultaneously. This event is definitely worth checking out again next year.

New Blog Feature

For those of you that like to plan ahead, we have added a page with an expanded monthly calendar.  You can find the link over to the right of the page toward the top. We hope this is just one more aspect of our blog that can help you enjoy family fun in Louisville!
