Review: Shrek The Musical at The Kentucky Center

Shrek The Musical closes out the 2010-2011 season for Broadway Across America - Louisville.  We had the opportunity to see the show this event and had a fantastic time.  Both the show and venue were perfect for families!  The show runs until Sunday, June 12th and they still have tickets available!  The show ran a little under 3 hours which included a 20 minute intermission. Food and refreshments were available in the lobby as well as some snacks (nuts, candy) that you can bring into the theater.  Parking at The Kentucky Center was $6 for the event.

If you have seen the Shrek movies, you know that it is a comedy that provides quick one-liners and quirky fun.  This musical was just the same, if not more, since it was live.  The set was so colorful and changed quickly and often, which kept the attention of my 2 and 4 year old children.  The show was similar enough to the movies that my kids were thrilled when they recognized some of their favorite parts of the movie. But, it wasn't a copy of the movie which I made it more engaging since it was like we hadn't seen it before.

My son reported that his favorite part was when the dragon sang. They had crew members dressed in black that skillfully controlled a very large and vibrant dragon while an actress sang the song (and sang it very well!).  It was fascinating to watch and obviously caught my son's eye.  I really liked the Lord Farquadd character because I just could not help but laugh at how they made him shorter! You will have to see it!  (what a tease, I know!)  My daughter said that she just loved seeing the "real" Shrek and my husband, who is not typically into musicals, said he thought it was funny and that he enjoyed it.  The entire theater erupted in laughter quite frequently, I think everyone there was truly having a good time!

Next season, Broadway Across America is bringing exciting new shows to Louisville!  You can get season tickets or individual tickets for fabuLOUs shows like Mary Poppins, Blue Man Group, Fiddler on the Roof and more!
