"Copy Cat" Art with your Children

Here is a fairly simply activity to do with kids of any age. If you need a little down time or on a rainy day, rather than handing your child a coloring book with crayons while you do other things, sit down with them and do some drawing side by side.

With all of the back-to-school sales, I picked up several spiral notebooks for just 15 cents each.  I sat down with my daughter to draw a scene side by side on the open notebook. My son was intrigued, so he joined us with a separate piece of paper.  We talked about different scenes to draw and went with a park.  We discussed all about what we find at a park.  The kids were yelling out: TREES! BIRDS! THE SUN!  FLOWERS! and on and on.  Each time they named an item that is found in a park, we talked about the color, whether it is big or small, is it thin or wide? etc.  They really enjoyed interacting in this way and in the end, we got 3 pictures of the same scene done by a 2 year old, a 4 year old and a ## year old mommy (ha!)  Very interesting!

Try it out!  You can do scenes like: the beach, the zoo, your own yard, a bedroom, the library, school classroom, a farm and on and on!  Continue on subsequent pieces of paper. Title and date the pictures and create a little bound art book made by you and your child!  All for 15 cents!

I love this idea! I love turning a fun activity into a learning experience. Thanks for this!
