Baby Talk series to aid parents, grandparents at the Louisville Science Center

 “Baby Talk,” a series of free discussions for parents, grandparents and caregivers on the growth and development of young children, will be offered from September – December at the Louisville Science Center. The series is sponsored by Education Savings Plan Trust.

Each session will focus on a different aspect of child development and parenting. The series will be led by local experts.

The first topic, “Milestones,” will be offered Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. and repeated Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Teething, sleeping through the night, work-home balance and ways to maintain energy while caring for babies will be discussed. Presenters are Jennifer M. Blaire, author, life coach and founder, Excavive Life Coaching; Lelah Rezaei, MD, Pediatric Associates of Southern Indiana (Sept. 11 only), and Julia Richerson, MD, FAAP, Family Health Centers (Sept. 13 only). The session’s moderator on Sept. 11 is Kristen Riddick, host of “Real Life with Kristen” on 900 AM WFIA.

“Food for Thought” will be Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and repeated on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nutrition information, additives and preservatives and making baby food will be discussed, and the Kentucky Poison Control Center will cover how to teach children what is safe and unsafe to consume. Presenters are Beth Ruley, registered dietician, Kosair Children’s Hospital; and Brooke Wilson, education program coordinator, Kentucky Regional Poison Control Center. Riddick also will moderate the Oct. 11 session.

“Play Time” is Sunday, Nov. 13, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and repeated on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Exercises and toys that are best for baby’s brain and physical development will be highlighted, and ways to get active with your child and to stimulate innate curiosity in young children will be discussed. Presenter is Jody L. Clasey, PhD, FACSM, Exercise Physiologist and Associate Professor, Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at the University of Kentucky. “Baby Boot Camp” is Sunday, Dec. 11, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., repeated on Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. New parents and parents-to-be can try a series of challenges on baby basics, including swaddling, diaper changing, testing water temperature and more!
