10 activities to do over winter break

DCPD

Winter break fun in Louisville. Here are events and things to do over winter break.

Winter break can be long and you might need some boredom busters. There’s enough spending going on, don’t you think?

Winter break is here! I have some of these things on my list to help break up the days and make sure we have a good balance of fun activities. I hope we get some snow because a day or two of sledding would be perfect!

Here are 10 ideas for winter break fun 2022-2023

1) Winter Woods Spectacular is great during the week with less people. This year it is a walk thru event so bundle up, pack some hot chocolate, and go for a walk in the woods!

2) Go to Yew Dell Gardens, it’s free during their winter hours. Who cares if it’s cold!? Bundle up and then afterwards, grab some hot chocolate to warm up! The good thing about it being free is you can see as much or as little as you want. While in Crestwood, Maples Park is also nice to explore. Closed December 23rd-January 2nd.

3) Ice skating is a sure way to get active with a ton of laughs. Here’s a list of places to check out. Fete de Noel & Jeffersonville are the outdoor ice skating option. Be sure to bring a change of gloves because they will get wet from falling. And, if you plan on not going home right away after, you might want a change of pants too because that ice will make your pants cold and wet as well. Sounds fun, right?! It really is!

4) Go see the lights all around town. Some of them do turn off after Christmas but many will keep the lights bright. It’s still fun, even after Christmas. There are some of the best options and some drive thru/walk and see options.

5) Kick off the new year with being active. Go for a hike. Hiking isn’t just for the warmer months! We have continued to hit the trails even as it gets colder. Some tips are to dress in layers because you think you want to bundle up and then you get moving and get hot. And, wear old shoes because some of the trails stay muddier longer this time of year. Here’s a list of great hiking spots.

6) Check out Whet Your Palette for daily paint classes, drop-in painting sessions, private events, and more! If you haven’t thought of a gift for a grandparent or someone else special, perhaps you or the kids can make something.

7) If it snows – head to Cherokee Park – they have approved sledding hills and they are super fast!! Want more sledding ideas?  Click here for our list of places. There are also tubing and skiing options in Southern Indiana.

8) Head to the Speed Art Museum on Sundays during winter break for indoor fun for free. However, holidays fall on Sundays for this winter break. Speed has special programing over break. December 30 is Winter Family Day from 1-4pm, the planned activities will be included in your ticket to the Museum.

Family Day: Throughout 1 to 4 pm in the Atrium: Start your scavenger hunts and try out some Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau Visionary coloring pages.
  • 1– 4 PM: Reading nook and Storytelling in the English Renaissance room, times will vary
  • 1– 3:30 PM: Drop-in art-making in Art Sparks classrooms
  • 1:30 – 3:30 PM: Early Childhood Museum Playdate in Gallery 3
  • 2 PM & 3 PM: Art Detective STEAM crate in the Cinema Lobby

9) Bundle up for a trip to Gardens Aglimmer at Waterfront Botanical Gardens. Enjoy a sparkling winter wonderland of swans, snowflakes, deer, Moravian stars, oversized flowers, light bursts, candles, and a multicolor tunnel of lights. Wander the Beargrass Creek Pathway under icicle arches and a waterfall stream aglow. Check their website for dates and times and to make a reservation! $10 per person, kids 6 and under are free.

10) If you are feeling adventurous and want to be creative a visit to Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery may be the place for you. When there you can make a project of your own, the hardest part is picking what you want to make. Some ideas include ornaments, bowls, and vases.

Have a fantastic winter break!
